"Hashcash: theory and applications". 

Abstract: Hashcash is a system where, in order to use a service, the caller
needs to spend a moderate amount of time to create an access token, that can
be verified in much shorter time by the server itself. It has been proposed
as a measure to counter spam, for instance. We will investigate the
usefulness of this approach, discuss other applications of hashcash systems,
and the theory behind hashcash.
