Subject: Vacancy for PhD position at CWI
Date: Thu, 24 Jul 2003 16:01:03 +0200

PhD student at CWI (Centrum voor Wiksunde en Informatica) in Amsterdam,
on the project: Algorithmic validation of widely used cryptosystems.
Contact person: Herman te Riele, e-mail: herman@cwi.nl

----------------------------------------------------------------------

The research group "Computational Number Theory and Data Security"
at CWI has a vacancy for a

          Ph.D. student

in the project

"Algorithmic validation of widely used cryptosystems".

This project is financed by the Netherlands Organisation for
Scientific Research (NWO) and will be carried out in cooperation
with Leiden University (prof.dr. R. Tijdeman) and Eindhoven University/
Citibank (prof.dr. A.K. Lenstra). Advisor for this project is
Dr. Peter Montgomery (San Rafael, CA, USA).

This four-year project is a continuation of research efforts at CWI
for the validation of widely used cryptosystems, like RSA and the
Diffie-Hellman key exchange system. For the validation of RSA, the aim
is to study, improve and analyse existing algorithms, and develop new
algorithms for factoring the largest possible RSA keys.
For key exchange systems, a comparison will be made of the best known
algorithms for computing discrete logarithms in large prime fields.
Results obtained for sieve-based factoring algorithms will be carried over
to sieve-based algorithms for computing discrete logarithms.
With the algorithmic and implementational results obtained in this research,
a new world record attempt may be undertaken for factoring RSA keys.

This project should result in a PhD thesis.
The candidate is expected to have a Master's degree in mathematics and/or
computer science with emphasis on cryptography, number theory, and programming.
