Privacy and Cryptographic Mechanisms

Dr. Moti Yung
Colombia University, USA

May 8 - 12, 2006

Dr. Moti Yung <http://www1.cs.columbia.edu/~moti/> obtained his Ph.D.
in Computer Science at Columbia University. His career included the T.J.
Watson Research Center of IBM, a position as VP and Chief Scientist at
CertCo and work as an Industry Consultant, working on information
security and cryptography. Currently, he is Director at RSA Laboratories
and Visiting Senior Research Scientist at Columbia University. His
interests include cryptography, security, networks and distributed
systems, but also the theory of computation (computational complexity,
randomization, algorithms) and applications, such as secure systems in
the context of E-commerce, banking, and secure web. His list of
publications includes about twenty articles in the Proceedings of the
CRYPTO conferences and the same number of articles in the EUROCRYPT
Proceedings.

Contents
Traditionally, cryptographic mechanisms such as Signing or Public-Key
Encryption are associated with users in a strong fashion (the name of
the signer or of the message receiver are known). The basic question
that this minicourse deals with is: are there ways to make cryptographic
mechanisms that will be dominant in a future computing infrastructure
more privacy-friendly? We will discuss how to model and formalize
notions of cryptographic primitives that are aimed at better balance
between privacy (e.g., user anonymity) and traditional properties of
cryptographic methods (e.g., non-repudiation). We will show how to
construct mechanisms that hide a user's identity while having useful
provable correctness and security properties (e.g., group signing). We
will further discuss how to apply these methods in the context of a
computing infrastructure that requires trust, security, but also
privacy.

Time and Place
Technische Universiteit Eindhoven, The Netherlands

Admission fee
The admission fee for a minicourse is EUR 300 for university staff
members and PhD students, and EUR 500 for people from industry. EIDMA
and DIAMANT members receive a reduction of EUR 100 on these amounts.
Members of DIAMANT can apply for additional support by following the
instructions on the registration form. For undergraduate students
special conditions apply.
